Zdenek Vykoukal, Moravia, Czech Republic
ZDENEK vineyards are in the famours Hostěrádky-Rešov area. He works a day job as a train station master in a nearby town, and the rest of his time he is absorbed in cultivating 1.5 ha of land organically, which also includes old some vines planted in 1953. With winegrowing and cellaring being a family tradition for them, owning and producing wine for Zdenek seemed like the natural thing to do. He began making wine in 1996 and professionally in 2008.
Zdenek's wines come from a very unique area, which is an ancient sea bed and the hills/slopes on which the vineyards are now on were underwater cliffs. Pure limestone soils really brings an intense and saline character to the Gruner Veltliner, Rieslings, Chardonnay, Neuburger in whites and Cabernet Moravia, St Laurent and Pinot Noir in reds.
Also the vin d’Austerlitz on the labels is in reference to the legendary battle of Austerlitz fought on these hills which now are dotted with vineyards. Visiting this area and walking on the path is pretty special and almost thinking back to the historic times when 240,000 soldiers battled and 100,000 perished.
