Krásná Hora, Moravia, Czech Republic
KRÁSNÁ Hora, or Beautiful Mountain, are on the gently sloping mountains in Dolni Poddvorov town, close to the Slovakian border. They own 8 hectares, and most of these vineyards were first planted by Cistercian monks in the 13th century, going back to 800 years ago. With a southern and southwestern slope aspect, these sites are carefully tended to, and they do not use any herbicides or systemic agents instead their own preparations of fertilizers, such as compost and herb plantings are used in-between rows. Krásná Hora recently took on biodynamics and believe that this helps them to be more in tune with the vineyard and soils and have a better understanding of the land.
Their vineyards are planted with traditional French varieties like Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Merlot. They also buy grapes from another 5 ha of vineyards, but all these vineyards follow organic practices and the team at Krasna Hora work very closely with the growers. All grapes are handpicked into small, open boxes with yields per vine kept below 1kg.
In the winery, minimum intervention is followed. All red wines and increasing number of white wines go through longer elevage. Whites are given more time to spend on its lees in large barrels. Use of So2 is kept low. They believe that when work in the vineyard has been done properly they can take a hands off approach in the winery and intervene only when they see it necessary.
